How One Flight Home Changed the Way I Think About Faith
Trusting God when you can’t see the runway isn’t just about flying – it’s about learning to find peace when everyday life feels uncertain.
A Different Seat, A Different Perspective
Years ago, I worked for an airline, and one of the perks was the opportunity to fly for free whenever there was an empty seat. Around Thanksgiving and Christmas, though, flights were often completely full.
One holiday season, I was traveling home from my new location in sunny Orlando to see family under the gray winter skies of Dayton, Ohio. Since every passenger seat was taken, I asked the pilots if I could ride in the cockpit. They had a small jump seat behind them, and airline employees were occasionally allowed to ride there. I thanked them and buckled my seat belt.
I don’t remember if it was my first cockpit ride, but I do remember being fascinated by how calm everything seemed. Takeoff was smooth. The pilots talked casually about family, golf, and everyday life. The aircraft’s systems handled much of the flying. It seemed way too easy, but the pilots remained engaged, monitoring the instruments and occasionally making small adjustments along the way. There was a quiet confidence in the cockpit that was both reassuring and impressive.
When The Clouds Closed In
As we began our descent into Dayton, things changed. Outside the windshield in front, all I could see were clouds.
If you’ve flown before, you know you can usually sense when you’re getting ready to land, getting closer and closer to the ground. We continued descending, but there was still nothing to see except a blanket of gray. I remember thinking, We’re getting really close to the ground!
Then I heard an automated warning voice: “Minimums… Minimums…” My understanding was that the pilots had reached a critical decision point. Either they would see the runway and land, or they would abort the landing and climb back into the clouds.
I couldn’t see a thing. I was a little nervous. Yet, the pilots were completely unfazed.
Then, in what felt like an instant, the clouds parted. There it was. The runway appeared straight ahead, VERY close, but perfectly centered, right in front of us. Just a few seconds later, we touched down, with little time to spare. I probably took a few deep breaths. We taxied to the gate, I thanked the pilots again, and everyone went on with their day.
The Difference Between Fear And Confidence
I’ve never forgotten that flight because, over the years, I’ve realized what a great lesson it was. Life feels different when the “clouds” move in. Most of us don’t struggle when things are going well and we can clearly see ahead. We struggle when we’re surrounded by uncertainty.
A relationship begins to unravel.
A medical diagnosis changes everything.
A job disappears.
A child makes heartbreaking choices.
The future becomes hidden behind clouds we can’t control.
Our natural tendency is to panic because we want visibility before we move forward. But faith isn’t about seeing and knowing – it’s about trusting.
The pilots that day weren’t depending on their emotions during that flight. They weren’t relying on what their eyes could see during landing because visibility was zero! They trusted their instruments – with faith that had guided them on countless flights before.
Trusting God When You Can’t See Clearly
God invites us to live the same way.
His Word becomes our instrument panel.
His promises and principles become our guidance system.
His presence becomes our confidence and peace.
That doesn’t mean the clouds aren’t real. It doesn’t mean we ignore pain, grief, anxiety, or uncertainty. It simply means we don’t focus or dwell on them.
Trusting God More Than Our Feelings
One of my favorite passages reminds us:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3:5–6 (NLT)
We used to sing a song about these verses when I taught Sunday School.
Notice that Solomon doesn’t promise that we’ll always understand.
He promises that God will guide.
Sometimes, that’s all we need.
Today, you may be flying through your own clouds. Maybe you can’t see how your marriage will heal, how your finances will recover, how your addiction will loosen its grip, or how God could possibly redeem what feels broken.
But the “runway” doesn’t have to be visible for God to still be in control and leading.
He sees what you can’t see.
He knows where you are.
And He is faithful to bring you safely home.
Don’t let the clouds determine your peace. Trust the One who never loses sight of the runway.
